Magnetic Resonance (2022)
Magnetic Resonance was inspired by my experience of doing an MRI scan.
At the time, it was a disturbing experience. On one hand, hearing the relentless machinery that felt like I was having holes drilled into my brain forced me to properly reckon with the fact that something was wrong with my body.
On the other, I was also strangely drawn to these sounds - the rhythmic, almost musical qualities of these sounds - and afterwards felt it could make a compelling electroacoustic piece.
These ideas later morphed into one of the more experimental classical pieces I've written as I sought to compose a string quartet piece utilising both electroacoustic and ambient production approaches.
Featuring a variety of string extended techniques, vocal utterances and gestural instructions, Magnetic Resonance captures the initial static tenseness of the scan room, the variety of rhythms and timbres heard during the scan, the effects the scan may have on one's psyche as the senses progressively gets overwhelmed and the foreboding emptiness after, not knowing when or what the results will be.
Magnetic Resonance was workshopped by Quatuor Bozzini in Montreal, Canada in February 2021, and the recording released online in December 2022.
